Do you Xanga?

By: Yvette Cavazos

It started off with chatting on line with your friends now most teenagers that have internet at home are subscribed to some kind of website were you get to tell about your self and learn about other people. Xanga is one of those websites that teenagers are subscribed to along with myspace and online journal. This is basically a place where you go and write about yourself for other people to read about and where you write about what happens during you day. Other people can subscribe to you and learn more about you or comment on what you wrote. In a way its as if your connected to everyone somehow and you get to read about new people everyday.

There is also something that they call blogrings. Blogrings are like groups that you can join on these websites. They are categorized into different things for example some one can make a blogring about being a singer or writer and If you want to join you can.

Regular use of xanga, myspace, and online journal is free but you can also pay for a premium use which just gives you more advantages of using it. For example If you have premium use on xanga you can use more smilies or you can upload more pictures for your website.

Many people like using these websites to meet more people and also to let off steam by writing what is on there mind but there is restrictions to the uses you have to agree to some user terms so you don’t violate any of the ruels.

So if you want to meet people or if you just want to see what it is all about go ahead its free.

Just like John and Paul

You know there are bands at school- the marching band, mariachi band, and the orchestra, but did you know there are other bands at Grand Prairie High School? Many students from GPHS compose all or part of independent musical groups. They’ve decided to purse performing music- an interest that might pay of big some day.
High School is the time wen everyone decides they are finally going to “pick” up a guitar or “beat” it to the drums. For these beginners, it is hard to find a spot to practice or play with a group. In contrast are the following bands, composed of gifted players who spent years honing their skills on their chosen instrument.
Representing the sophomore class is The Lenny’s. They have that raunchy, punk rock sound that has been popular since the late 80’s. GPHS Sophomores Caesar Barragan and Josh Smith offer the drums and bass. SGP students Ben Sanchez and Chris Parik round out the band. The Lenny’s style is a mix of Comeback Kids and Minor Threat, offering a handful of chant-ridden punk rock anthems. The Lenny’s live show is a spectacle to behold. Their ability to work a crowd is part of their success, and it isn’t uncommon to see the Lenny’s ending a set alongside a stage full of sweaty, chanting punk fans.
The Public Hazards are a punk/hardcore outfit in the vein of Comeback kids. The Hazards feature sophomore Ricky Riviera on drums, and freshman Adam Cedillo on guitar and vocals. The Public Hazards, formally “FSP” was formed while the members were in middle school. Over the last year they have undergone stylistic changes, but recently have returned to their roots in punk rock. The Hazards have played with several national touring acts and have firmly established themselves in the local punk scene.
For a band that resists categorization, take and all-out metal/math rock player, an indie guitarist/singer, a punk bassist, and a Ska drummer, and you have Modern Age. Junior lead guitarist, Tony “King Tone” Martinez, started playing guitar in 9th grade. Sophomore, Chris “Couch” Ramirez plays bass. Junior, Hunter “DIsarm” Nelson sings and plays guitar. Modern Age has managed to resist the ever-popular stylistic conversion to hardcore, opting instead to blend key elements from several genres of music to create a unique listening experience.
The Progressive Rock act, Ambient, is a collaboration between junior drummer Arty Fernandex and junior guitarist Tony Pulice. Progressive Rock is a highly technical style that takes flashy drumming and layered guitar tracks that are usually heavily saturated with effects. Some PR bands include Boston, Rush, and Dream Theater. Mike Portnoy, the drummer from Dream Theater, heavily influences Arty’s drumming. Ambient’s lyrical content is deeply spiritual and deals with events from the members’ lives. Ambient is currently recording a full-length album in Arty’s home studio.
One Day Late is a Punk/ Screamo (heart- felt, emotional lyrics delivered through violent screaming) Grand Prairie band. ODL is fronted b senior guitarist/ singer Mike Toole and senior bassist/screamer, Matt Bowers. According to Toole, ODL is influenced by punk acts ranging from the Ramones to The Casualties and The Virus. ODL has played several shows in the Dallas club scene and has been featured on the Door main stage.
These bands Practice constantly, and frequently play shows at local venues. They self-promote shows by handing out homemade photocopied flyers to friends and fellow students. Some of these young musicians view being in a band as a hobby, but others take it very seriously. All the bands want to see people come to their shows and enjoy the music and the performance. It makes all their hard work feel worth while.

Supply list

Duct tape (color of your choice)

Scissors

Surface that you can cut on (I am using an old cutting board)

Ruler

  1. The first thing you need to do is measure out nine 9 in. pieces of duct tape.
  2. Now take one piece of tape and place it sticky side up.
  3. Then take another piece and place it sticky side down half way on the first piece.
  4. Next flip down the sticky part on the first piece of tape on to the second piece.
  5. Now flip the pieces over and continue adding pieces of tape until you get to the last piece. You end the last piece the same way you did the first piece, by flipping it down.
  6. What you have should look somewhat like the picture below.
  7. Now fold the layered duct tape in half hamburger style.
  8. Measure two 3.5 in. pieces of tape.
  9. Take the tape and place them on the end of the folded layered duct tape.
  10. Fold the wallet to make it tri-fold.
  11. Now its time for the pockets. Measure six 3.5 in. pieces of duct tape.
  12. Take three of the pieces and layer them just like you did to make the wallet so you get just a little piece.
  13. Place the piece on one of the ends of the wallet.
  14. Tape the piece down with little pieces of duct tape.
  15. Now you have a pocket. Take the other pieces you have left of tape and repeat the process.
  16. You can decorate the wallet however you want. YOU NOW HAVE A CUSTOM DUCT TAPE WALLET!

Underclassman

By: Yvette Cavazos

From reading 32 pages, writing a 500-word essay, and trying to go to all the school activities it gets hard being an underclassman. Not do I worrying about getting my homework done but also staying involved and fitting in with the upperclassman. Ever since before I started high school I couldn’t wait to be in the high school rush but now that I am in it I feel like I need a break. It gets very stressful especially if you want to get recognized by the big universities and get good scholarships. Staying up until three in the morning trying to study for a huge test I have in the morning really has wore me out and then I figure I still have 2 more years to go and its going to get worse every year especially senior year when I have to turn in all my college applications. Well good luck to all us underclassman and I hope it doesn’t get to hard!!

(hey girls i dont know if this will work but i wrote it any way!!)
